In china, the seeds of the plant are known as niu bang zi, and it is used to get rid of fevers and evil spirits. It is also used in chinese  medicine to lower blood sugar levels.

The Burdock plant is well known of it’s hooked burrs, which are notorious for attaching themselves to clothing. This aspect of the plant is registered in it’s Latin scientific name, Arctium lappa, which is derived from the Greek lappa, which means to seize.

Three parts of the Burdock plant is used to create herbal remedies, the root, the seeds, and the leaves. The root of the plant is often used by the Japanese to treat a variety of ailments. They think of the burdock root has a vegetable, which they call godo.

Another commonly used part of the Burdock plant is the seeds. The seeds of the plant are used in several healing remedies of many healing traditions. For instance, the American Eclectic School of Healing has traditionally integrated the Burdock seeds as a diuretic or to create healing skin tonics. In traditional Chinese medicine, the seed are often used to treat common colds that are characterized by an unproductive cough and sore throat. The seeds of the Burdock plant are traditionally harvested in the late summer.

The leaves of the Burdock plant are also harvested to create several herbal remedies. In general, the leaves of the plant are thought to be less effective than other parts, especially the root. The leaves of the Burdock plant are most commonly used to create a healing tonic for common stomach complaints, including indigestion and overall digestive waekness. The leaves of the plant are harvested before or during their flowering.

To create an herbal remedy using the Burdock plant, one easy way is to infuse the plants leaves to create a hot tea to treat indigestion. Burdock tea is used to treat indigestion by being taken in half-cup doses before meals. Burdock tea can also be taken as a mild digestive stimulant. Another herbal remedy from the plant is a poultice from the root of the plant, which can be applied to skin sores and leg ulcers.

Brew tea same as you would to drink, or stronger for more color, soak fabric in liquid until it appears a bit darker than you would like the fabric to be. Even soaking overnight will give a stronger color. Black tea gives the darkest hue. Keep in mind that it will lighten as it dries. Finished items can also be tea stained in  the same manner. An old blouse, or a piece of embroidery, or just about anything you can think of, can be aged in this way.

13. Make the wood shines- Clean wood furniture or wood floors with a soft cloth dipped in a freshly prepared tea to add shine to them. I alternate mopping of my hardwood kitchen floor with strong tea and white vinegar.

Prior to the final minutes of cooking, the eggshells are slightly cracked, this allowing the teas to seeo through and create this magical “marbled” effect; either green or black tea are great for this. spices are often added to this mixture for “Son-In-Law-Eggs”.

18.Rubs- Dried leaves can add cruch and flavor for rubs to coat fish, meat or poultry or to be used as a garnish, particularly young green or white tea leaves. What are The Risk Factors for Breast Cancer

24 04 2009

Breast cancer is a largely unknown disease until today, despite the fact that it affects almost ten percent of the women above the age of forty years all over the world. The causes of this killer cancer are not known even after decades of research into it. Similarly it is unknown why some women ave higher chances of getting breast cancers than others.

Thought the caussative factors are not known, some risk factors have been identified. There is no medical proof why these factors make the disease more probable, but this is a study of observation. In a vast cross-section of women with the observed risk factors, it been found that the chances of getting breast cancers are very high.

The various risk factors for breast cancer are-

   1. Family History of Breast Cancer- If a near relative like mother or a sister has had breast cancer, then there is a very high chance that the cancer will occur sometime in life. This propensity is observed ev en if far relatives such as cousins and aunts have had beast cancer, though the chances are lesser as the relatives are more removed. Even if a male relative has had breast cancer or prostate cancer, then there is a chance of getting breast cancer. This clearly indicates that breast cancer runs through family lines through inheritance. Certainly the chances are very high if more than one family member has had breast cancer.

   2. Personnal History of Breast Cancer- If a woman has had breast cancer in the past, then there is a great chance that the breast cancer may recur. This is true even if the cancer had been removed in it’s benign stage itself. Sometimes the cancer cells spread into the nearby lymph. This makes a possibility that the cancer will occur in the opposite breast. In fact, women who have had cancer in one breast have 50 to 75% more chances of developing the cancer in the other breast.

   3. Disease of the Breast- Several breast diseases can increase the chances of having breast cancer. Changes in the cells of the breast can lead to atypical hyperplasia. This condition can cause a three to fourfold increase in the possibility of getting breast cancer in the later years. This risk also exists if the atypical hyperplasia has occurred in other women of the family. Another such condition is the benign breast tumor condition known as fibro adenoma. However, women with fibrocystic breast generally do not have any added vulnerability to breast cancer.  Yet such conditions could make the breasts lumpy and hide the real tumors during mammography.

   4. Lifestyle- In today’s world, lifestyle is the single largest contributing factor for the proliferation of breast cancer among women. Several elements of the lifestyle have been found to be directly accordant with the prevalence of breast cancer. Smoking and alcoholism in women are among the chief factors. Even diet has been pointed out as an important risk factor. Women who consume a diet with more high-cholesterol fats in them have higher chances of breast cancer. At the same time leading a sedentary lifestyle without induling much in physical activity are also potentially dangerous.

  5. Radiation- It has been found that women who undergo radiation therapies in their chest region at a young age have an increased risk of developing breast cancer in their later lives. Radiation therapy is generally prescribed for women with conditions like Hodgkin’s disease or non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. so women who have undergone such treatments may get breat cancer in their later years.

   6. Hormonal Imbalances- There are several factors that can change the hormone balance of the body. some of them are,

   a) Beginning the menstrual cycle early, before the age of twelve years,

   b) Having the first pregnancy after the age of thirty years

   c) Having no pregnancy at all,

   d) Having a late menopause,

All these conditions can increase the level of estrogen in the body. This increase the risk of getting breat cancer to a mild extent. Apart from that women who take regular birth control pills, breast enhancement supplements, antidepressants and antihistamines and hormone modifying supplements stand at a higher risk to get breast cancers.

It must be also noted that women have much higher vhances of getting breast cancer than men. In fact, most people think that breast cancer is a disease that affect only women. This is not true. Men also get breast cancers, but to a much lessor degree than women. Also, age is a very important factor. The chances of getting breast cancer are much higher when the women has crossed the age of 50 years.

How to do Breast Self Exam

23 04 2009

Breast self-examination is a very simple proceduce which women can perform in the confines of the bedrooms or bathrooms. This test is a veryimportant self diagnostic tool to determine the risks of breast cancer. Nowadays, doctors are emphasizing on the point that each women should preform breast self-examinations regularly so that they can find out if there are any abnormalities in their breasts.

One important factor that is in flavor of breast self-examination is that no one will know her breast as accurately as the women herself. Doctor are encouraging women to became more familiarized with their own breast so that they can immediately find out any abnormalities. Women should know the contours, the feel, the texture and the color of their breast prefectly. This is an important part of the breast self-examination technique.

   How  to Self-Examine the Breast:

The first part of self- examination of the breasts is pure observation. The women must remove her upper body garment and stand in front of a mirror. Then she should place her hands by her sides. The next step is observation of the breast. For this, the women must first observe the breasts from those sides in the mirror. This observation must be repeated with the hands on the hips and finally with the hands placed over the head. Any abnormality in the breast must be noted.

The next stage of breast self-examination is actually touching the breast to find out any abnormalities. There are two methrods to carry out this part of the self- examination.

   (1) Circular sweep Methrod

For this methrod, the left hand is to be placed behind the head and the right hand is used to touch different parts of the breast. Women wo are more comfortable with the right hand behind the head and the left hand touching the breast may do so. The free hand must kept on the top of the breast region, just where the bulge begins. Then the hand is to be moved gradually in a clockwise manner, feeling the breast carefully at each point for lumps or any other kind of deformities. When one circle is completed, the hand must be taken a little inside the breast and the circular sweep must be done again. In this way, the circle must be progressively decreased until the hand reaches the nipple area. At every point gentle but steady pressure must be applied to check that there are no anonalies in the breasts. Finally, when the hand reached the nipple tissue, the fingers must be used to squeeze the nipple in both vertical and horizontal positions to check if there is any question.

   (2) Pie Chart Methrod

Here too, the women self- examining her breast needs to keep one hand behind her head and examine the breast with the other hand. The hand is to be placed on the top region of the breast and then swept downwards, towards the protuberance of the nipple. along the way, the fingers must be used to check if there are any lumps in the breast. When the hand reaches the nipples after one sweep, then it must be taken to the top again, placed a little to the left and swept downwards again. In this manner, the whole breast must be covered, even from the lower region, checking every point. If a firmer touch is required, then the fingers can be moved in a walking type of motion over the breast. Again, this examination must be ended with a pinching of the nipples in both vertical and horizontal directions to check for any abnormal secretion.

   Age to Begin Breast self-examination,

Hormonal changes begin occurring from the onset of puberty, when the girl reaches twelve years of age in normal circumstances. When the girl is in her post-puberty, which is roughly twenty years, the estrogen amounts have generally built up to their maturity levels. This is when breast self- examination must begin.

The breast self- examination must be carried out as a routine procedure. In fact every woman who has crossed the age of twenty years must carry out the examination once a month while in the shower. When the women has crossed the age of forty years, then only breast self- examination is not enough. At that time, the woman must have a mammogram taken at least once a year.

The Best Time to Self-Examination the Breast

Breast are prone to undergo several changes within the menstrual cycle of the woman. At some times during the cylce, the breast are soft, while at some other times, they may be firm. This happens generally in the later days of the menstrual cycle. When the breasts are firm, it is more difficult to check them for any lumpy growths. Therefore, the ideal time for carrying out breast self- examination would be one week after the menstrual flow has occurred.

Tips on Prevent Breast Cancer

22 04 2009

Breast cancer has earned the disrepute of becoming the secord most killing type of all cancers that are found in humans, having lost the race only to lung cancer. About one in every ten women has a chance of developing breast cancer if precautions are not taken early on. Despite this alarming number of it’s victims, it is pathetic to know that there is an absolute lack of imformation on the disease. It is not that there is no written material available about the disease, but most women are too complacent regarding the problem. It is always the “disease that affects the other women so it doesn’t bother me” until it too late to remedy the situation.

Breast cancer is the abnormal growth of cells within the breast. These cells would aggregate like a lump, which would be called as the breast tumor. The tumor can be felt from the outside of the breast even when it is still harmless. All this harmless stage, it is called as a benign tumor. Benign tumors can be surgically operable. If that is done, the risk of the advancement of the breast cancer is very negligible. But if the tumor is allowed to go on, then it would continue to the malignant stage. During this stage the cancer would proliferate to such an extent within the surrounding tissues that it would be impossible to remove it completely. When the cancerous cells enter the bloodstream, there is no way out. The result is certain death.

Here are so precautions that women must take to prevent the onset of breast cancer:

   1. If your overweight, then seriously work at reducing your weight. Science has proved a direct relation between obesity and breast cancer. At the same time, lean women have a signifcantly lesser chance of contracting the disease.

  2. Do not introduce any supplements in your body that could change the internal hormonal balance of the body. In women, the two main femine character deciding hormones are progesterone and estrogen. These hormones maintain the proper balance of the female characteristics, including the shape and the function of the breasts. An alteration in this balance could bring on several female health related diseases, among which breast cancer is just one of them.

   3. Smoking is extremely hazardous in women as it can play havoc with the biological rhythm of the body. Excessive smoking could cause sterility in both the male and the female. but in women, smoking has been found that women who smoke stand at a much higher risk of breast cancer then others. The same can be said about women who consume too much of alcohol.

   4. Walking is considered to be effect in keeping breast cancer away. Walking is a simple exercise, but it can keep the women’s body fit. Aslo walking stimulates proper blood circulation in all parts of the body without making the person excessively tired. Apart from walking, other simple exercises like running, jumping, swimming, also effective.

   5. All women over the age of 40 are at risk of breast cancer. Hence they should keep their lifestyle healthy. The diet should be kept as natural as possible, and articial spices and preservatives must be avoided. elderly women should not lead sedentary lifestyles; they must involve themselves in some kind of physical activity or the other, depending on their lifestyles.

6.There has been a kind of an association established with high fats and breast cancers. Women whose diet consists of  a lot of fats are more susceptible to getting breast cancer than others. For this reason, it is necessary to minimize fats in the diet as much as possible. Instead of high-calorie fats, a low fat diet is preferable. This will also help to keep obesity and cardiovascular problems in check.

Breast Cancer prevention is more important than the treatment of the cancer itself, because prevention is always better than cure. The above precautions will greatly reduce the risk of having a cancer, but then they are not sureshot methrods. Medical science has not yet been able to come up with a good explanation as to why some women get breast cancer and some don’t. Hence at the slightest sign of any abnormality with your breasts it is necessary to seek urgent medical attention. Your vigilance might save your life.

High Blood Pressure Causes What Diseases

21 04 2009

There are three main disease caused by high blood pressure. They are each life threatening and they may or may not have any symptom’s other then you having high blood pressure. Many drug stores and grocery stories have blood pressure monitoring machines available to the general public for free. You should check your blood pressure every time you see one of the machine.

A good starting point for normal blood pressure is 120/80. The first number represents the systolic pressure. This is the maximum pressure in your arteries that is created during the contraction of the left ventricle. The secord number represents the diastolic blood pressure. The diastolic pressure is the measurement of the pressure in the arteries when the heart relaxes. Signs of high blood pressure is when the systolic pressure is over 130 or when the diastolic pressure is over 90. You should contract your health care provider when either of these conditions occur.

Coronary Heart Disease- The same plaque that blocks arteries to the brain can clog arteries that feed the heart causing coronary heart disease. All cells need oxygen from the bloodstream to survive, so reducing the amount of blood to the heart muscle can severly weaken or damage the heart muscle. If a blood clot blocks one of these coronary arteries of the heart, a heart attack can occur. If the blood is blocked for an extended time some of the cells of the heart will die. When too many of the cells of the heart die the heart can not pump oxgenated blood throughout the body very well and this can lead to other problems with the other organs of the human body and even death.

Kidney Damage- Your kidneys are responsible for filtering the waste products from the blood stream that passes through them and to remove excess fluid. High Blood pressure can damage the kidneys causing them to became less efficient. When the kidneys stop removing excessive fluid from the blood pressure. It is ver important to break this vicious cycle as soon as possible. When a complete shutdown of the functions of the kidney or renal failure occurs, you will need to have kidney dialysis or a kidney transplant in order to survive.

Aneurysm- Increased blood pressure will create alot of strain on your heart and arteries. Over time the walls of the arteries will weaken and an aneurysm will result. The arteries of the human body have three layers. Then the tough outer layer of connective tissue splits and allows the two inner layers of the blood vessel balloon or bulge out an aneurysm is formed. Its like a tire of an automoblic that has split allowing the inner tube to balloon outside of the protective outer tire. If the blood pressure problem is allow to continue it is only a matter of time before the aneurysm explodes.
