Chronic Renal Failure and Diabetes…
15 01 2010Diabetes Mellitus, a condition characterized by high blood sugar levels, is a cause of kidney failure. Over the time the millions of tiny filtering units within each kidney are damaged by high blood sugar levels. This eventually leads to kidney failure.
Susceptibility to nephropathy increases manifold in a diabetic person regardless of the usage of insulin. There is no cure for this condition and the treatment is life long. Renal artery stenosis or renovascular disease also effects diabetic people, it result due to narrowing of arteries to kidneys. This too is incurable and has a lifelong treatment. Treatment options include medication, dialysis and kidney transplant.
Chronic kidney disease or chronic renal failure is marked by a slow progressive decline in kidney functions. Unlike acute renal failure, chronic renal failure happens gradually. It occurs over a period of weeks, months or years and leads to a condition called end stage renal disease. The progession is so slow that the symptoms appears only towards the end when the major damage is already done.
Some signs of chronic failure which are more obvious than the others are increased urination especially at night. Blood in the urine, which isn’t very common. Urine that is cloudy or tea colored.
Other symptoms include edema or puffy eyes, hands and face. High blood pressure fatigue, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, thirst, bad breath, weight loss, peresistently itchy skin, muscle twiching and a yellowish-brown tint to skin.
As the kidney failure get worse and toxins continue to build up in the body, seizures and mental confusion can result.
