Cinnamon and Diabetes

Most people think of it a flavoring agent in desserts, candles and potpourri and nothing more than that, but it does more than make our homes and desserts smell good. This popular spice was used in ancient Egypt, China and India for culinary and medicinal purpose, and its use has also been documented in the Bible. It has medicinal value since ancient times. Besides that it is not only safe but also affordable.
Ceylon and cassia are the two types of cinnamon commonly found. Both are derived from the barks of evergreen trees. Ceylon cinnamon bark looks like tightly rolled scrolls, while cassia cinnamon is more looselt rolled.
Based on studies it seems to reduce blood sugar levels, triglycerides and LDL cholesterol in type 2 diabetics. Studies suggest that cinnamon makes cells responsive to insulin, which leads to better glucose control.
Cinnamon is used as an insulin substitute in type 2 diabetes. It has insulin like properties which makes it a popular natural choice for insulin substitute. it contains a bio-active component which helps it prevent or overcome diabetes. It is natural it has no known side effects in fact it helps one in more than one way. It increases vitality, balances energy, improves the digestion of fruits, milk, and other dairy products and helps reduce bloating and gas.
In some cases cinnamon may not cure diabetes but it may reduce the amount of insulin one needs. It may also prevent the onset of diabetes. However, having said that it is advisable to consult one’s physician before incorporating cinnamon into one’s diet.
