   In a diabetic person the risk of having eyes problems is very high. if the diabetes is well controlled one is likely to have some minor eye problem but if it is not then the complications may result in blindness too. This is why a diabetic person should be very careful regarding one’s eyes.

   If diagnosed early, most sight loss due to diabetes can be prevented. This can only be detected by a detailed eye examination. Hence the annual eye examinations are very important and should be followed diligently.

   Diabetes can affect the eyes in a number of ways. The most serious eye condition associated with diabetes involves the retina, and more specifically, the network of blood vessel lying within it. The name of this condition is diabetic retinopathy.

   Diabetic retinopathy is graded according to its severity which is as follows:

   Background diabetic retinopathy; This condition is very common in diabetics suffering for a long time. The vision will ne normal with no threat to eye sight.

   Maculopathy; It is the main cause of loss of vission and may cause gradually but progressively. However one doesn’t lose sight completely. In maculopathy the central vision gets worse and it makes recognizing people’s faces and reading small print difficult. However the good news is that it allows the person to get around the house and outside since peripheral vision is preserved.

   Proliferative diabetic netionpathy; In this condition blood vessels in the retina become blocked and new blood vessels form in the eye to provide blood supply to retina. Since the blood vessels are weak they bleed easily causing scar tiisue to form in the eye. This scarring causes retinal detachment, which scars and distorts retina. This bleeding and retinal detachment can result in loss of vision.

   To avoid the above mentioned problems one needs to control blood sugar levels, blood pressure levels and cholesterol levels. Along with that a regular annual visit to the ophthalmologist can prevent eye related problems amongst diabetics.
