30 05 2010

Pulling pain in the muscles is a common complaint with those who suffer from diabetes. This pain is caused by nerve damage to the peripheral nerve cells in the body. It is also known as Diabetic neuropathy. It is caused due to having high blood sugar over the years.

This high glucose content in the blood causes the blood vessels that bring oxygen to the nerves to get damaged over a period of time. The nerves get damaged due to the lack of oxygen and may stop sending messages or send them too slowly or even send them at the wrong time.

This results in a feeling of numbness or weakness in the limbs. It can also result in pulling in the arms and legs which is very painful. The damaged nerves may also cause harm to other important organs such as the heart, digestive tract and even the sex organs.

By preventing high levels of glucose in the blood you can avoid the nerve damage that can come to 50% of diabetics. A good diet and regular exercise are very useful tools to this effect. Take good care of your feet if you are diabetic as nerve damage is most often found there first.
