Acute Complications of Diabetes
7 06 2010The acute complications are those which come up all of sudden and can be very severe. Diabetic ketoacidosis or DKA is one such condition and Hyperglycemia hyperosmolar state or HNS is another. Hypoglycemia is yet another acute complication. These complications arise directly from diabetes and can be life threatening.
When the diabetic’s insulin level is low, the body will use the fat to burn for energy needs.If it continues for a long while the ketone bodies will decrease the blood’s pH allowing DKA to set in. Then the diabetic person will get dehydrated and find it difficult to breathe. If allowed to progress unchecked the lethargy can result in a coma. The person may also develop hypotension and die as a result of shock.
When the blood sugar is very high and water gets drawn out of the cells into the blood, glucose gets dumped into the diabetic’s urine. This is the cuase of HNS and it causes the body to get dehydrated. If left unchecked the dehydration can cause a medical emergency.
It the diabetic excessively medicates himself there is a chance that the glucose levels dip dangerously below normal. This is called hypoglycemia. The diabetic can become agitate and break into a sweat. There may be sense of sinking and panic attack as well. He may even lose consciousness. Immediate intake of sugar rich foods can minor symptoms.
