Chronic Complications of Diabetes

Chronic complications are those which occur gradually over a period of time. They build up in the body very gently and you don’t even know that you have developed them till they become very severe. With diabetes there are a set of chronic complications which may build up over time.

The three areas where these chronic complications set in are eye complications, nerve damage and kidney damage. The eye sight is the first to get affected in a diabetes person. If you have weak eyes and don’t get them checked regulaly you may find a chronic problem such as diabetic retinopathy brewing. Cataracts and glaucoma are also eye complications which are common in diabetic person.

Kidney damage due to the onset of diabetes is known as diabetic nephropathy, it begins with the leakage of protein in the urine. Eventually the kidneys lose the ability to filter and clean the blood leading to accumulation of toxins in the blood. This means that the diabetic must now also undergo dialysis.

The nerve on the periphery are more likely to get damaged and this is known as peripheral neuropathy in diabetics. Numbness of limbs, pain in feet and fingers are associated symptoms of diabetic neuropathy. There is no escape from these chronic symptoms.
