These chronic complications can be segregated into nephropathy, neuropathy, retinopathy and large blood vessel diseases.
From studies conducted by different diabetes control agancies it has been found that aggressive and intensive care has always helped to reduce and slow down the diabetic complications which may set in as early as in the very first year of diagnosis if left unchecked.
The Diabetes Control and Complications Trial known as DCCT and the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study or UKPDS have both revealed that constant monitoring and control of blood sugar levels in diabetic patients has helped to keep the chronic diabetic complications in check.
What it boils down to is that if as a diabetic you can keep your fasting glucose level at 70-120mg/dl and the pp at less than 160 mg/dl you are likely to slow down diabetic complications considerly. There is also the variable of hemoglobin which should also be in the normal prescribed level for the patients. So aggressive control of glucose in the blood stream is what is needed.
