Protein helps build strong muscles and bones. Foods with protein do not make blood glucose go up like carbohydrates do. Eating too much protein can be rough on your digestive system. The trick is to find the right balance of proteins to consume at each meal.

Carbohydrates are a great source of energy for our bodies and many different foods provide the body with them. Some are better for you than others. If you eat too many carbohydrates you risk your blood glucose getting too high. Learn to eat the right amount of carbohydrates at meals and snack times to keep your blood glucose in balance.

Fats are a good source of energy fuel for the body. Fats also help you grow. Fat does not make blood glucose go up but too much fat can make you gain weight. Some fats are better for you than others so learn which ones are right for you.

Other than proteins, carbohydrates and fats the body needs to be provided with vitamins and minerals so that it can function optimally. Chemical reactions in the body which take place during metabolism need these trace elements to take place correctly. A well balanced meal is all that it takes to keep your diabetes under control.
