Teens With Diabetes
4 07 2010According to a study by the Natiional Institutes of Health a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, it has been proved that many obese adolescents and ten have impaired glucose tolerance. This is a condition called being pre-diabetic which appears often just before the teenager develops type 2 diabetes.
A few decades ago type 2 diabetes was only seen in adults and was even called Adult Onset Diabetes. However with change in lifestyle more and more kids are now becoming obese and are at a far greater risk of developing diabetes while still in their teens.
Considering that obesity is the primary risk factor in teenage diabetes, it stands to reason that parents should ensure healthy eating and exercise habits in their children to avoid diabetes. If the teenager is already diabetic, the parents should explain to them that it is possible to reverse the effects of diabetes with strict control on diet and exercise.
While some may find that the diabetes gets cured, most teens will have to watch what they eat and how they exercise all thier lives. That is why it is important to teach them how to eat a balanced diet and get enough nutrition from their meals.
