Diabetic Meal Planning
17 07 2010If you are planning meals for a diabetic you must consider the Glycemic Index or gI of the foods. Foods with low GI are digested and absorbed more slowly, causing a more gradual rise in blood sugar and preventing rapid spikes in insulin levels. So it makes sense to avoid foods with a high GI and concertrate on those with a GI.
As a dietician you must work with your diabetes person to string together a meal plan which is right for them and which includes foods that they enjoy eating. Do not make too many drastic changes in their diet in the very first week as they will not be able to adjust well to that.
A diet can prove tough to follow so make sure that you give them planty of healthy snack alternatives which they can use to eat between meals. Take weight gain or weight loss into account when you plan for the subsequent weeks. Also take the kind of work they do into consideration when you decide on the number of calories that they must intake per day.
Be open to suggestion and approachable to the diabetic person so that they are able to ask you any doubts that they have.
