Diabetes Genetic…

21 07 2010

There are three types of diabetes Type 1, Type 2 and Gestation diabetes. In type 1 there is little choice as you will be born with it. However type 2 is what is called Adult onset diabetes. This is the one which can be prevented and even reversed if caught in time.

There does seem to be some indication of greater risk of developing diabetes if your parents or grandparents have the disease. However it is not necessary that just because your parents had diabetes, that you will also get the disease. Although you will have to work harder at keeping it away, than others would need to.

A number of environmental factors such as obesity, lack of physical activity, unhealthy diet and the age factor come into play to decide if you will develop diabetes. If you are neglecting your health and even if you do not have a family history of diabetes, it could just pop up in you!

So having a genetic disposition towards developing diabetes may not mean that you will get diabetes. Plus not having a hereditary disease of diabetes also does not mean that you will not get diabetes. It is best to look after your health and get regular check ups done so that you can beat the disease.

Dietary needs of diabetics differ from the dietary needs of regular healthy people. How ever diabetics also require the same levels of nutrition as everyone else. Maybe even more so as they must carefully consider what they eat.

Nutrition is one of the easiest and also the most important elements for controlling diabetes properly. Following a raw food menu will fit in with diabetic nturitional recommendations but you cannot make a complete switch so combine all elements. Here are some basic tips on eating right when you are diabetic.

Choose a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. Diabetics may need to limit starchy vegtables such as potato and yam. Pick citrus fruits over those rich in fructose.

Avoid processed grains such as white flour and white rice. Opt for whole grains instead. This helps build bulk of fiber and will prevent constipation too.

Add lentils and beans like pinto, garbanzo or kidney beans to your diet. Making sprouts out of beans and lentils is a great way to eat healthy foods.

Eat fish a few times a week. Consume non-fat dairy products. Reduce high-calorie snacks and cakes, cookies, chips and ice cream. Avoid all the junk food that you can. Eat as close to the natural state and avoid process foods.

18 07 2010

The flaxseed has been seen as a recent phenomena in the world of nutrition. It is a great source of omega 3 fatty acids and has a great nutty flavor, making it a good addition to any diet plan. This is why more people are adding flaxseed to their diet each day.

In addition it has been shown to help those with a risk of prostate cancer making it a healing food. As is usually true, when a food is shown to be medicinal for a particular disease or condition it may also help with other diseases. How does it help if you are a diabetic?

It is true that flaxseed may help lower your sugar levels. It is rich in alpha-linolenic acid (also known as ALA). ALA is an essential fatty acid that appears to be beneficial in preventing heart disease and related illnesses. Since most people who are diabetic are also obses and at risk for heart disease eating flaxseed may prove very beneficial to them.

Before you start popping too much flaxseed in your diet please remember that the presence of fatty acids makes flaxseed very rich in calories. So you will need to measure your intake. And also eat it without the cover as the nutrients get better absorbed into the body that way.

Diabetic Meal Planning

17 07 2010

If you are planning meals for a diabetic you must consider the Glycemic Index or gI of the foods. Foods with low GI are digested and absorbed more slowly, causing a more gradual rise in blood sugar and preventing rapid spikes in insulin levels. So it makes sense to avoid foods with a high GI and concertrate on those with a GI.

As a dietician you must work with your diabetes person to string together a meal plan which is right for them and which includes foods that they enjoy eating. Do not make too many drastic changes in their diet in the very first week as they will not be able to adjust well to that.

A diet can prove tough to follow so make sure that you give them planty of healthy snack alternatives which they can use to eat between meals. Take weight gain or weight loss into account when you plan for the subsequent weeks. Also take the kind of work they do into consideration when you decide on the number of calories that they must intake per day.

Be open to suggestion and approachable to the diabetic person so that they are able to ask you any doubts that they have.

How Does Apple Cider Vinegar Benefits Diabetics?

16 07 2010

Do you have diabetes or have been told that you may be pre-diabetic? Well dust that bottle of Apple Cider Vinegar standing on the kitchen shelf and take a swig of it before your meal. I know it does not taste good at all, but believe me it is good for you!!!

Dr Carol S. Johnston is studing how a little vinegar before meals may actually help diabetics and those with pre-diabetic symptoms manage insulin sensitivity. She is a scientist at the Department of Nutrition at Arizona State University and is studying the way nature agents help help control spikes in insulin and blood glucose after you eat a meal.

A 2001 Swedish Study showed that blood sugar spikes were controlled when pickles were eaten after a high carb breakfast. Eventually vinegar was shown to be the active agant which helped to control blood glucose spikes.

Now Dr Carol is looking at a new study which seems to suggest that having some vinegar with your meal may help out down the spike you get after eating meals as a diabetic person. The study is still far from definitive, but you can always try out the effects of adding a sip or two of vinegar to your diet.

‘2′ Strategies To Control Diabetes

13 07 2010

The two keys to controlling diabetes safely are exercise and diet. Any medication that you may take can have side effects, but eating the right kinds of food and getting enough exercise can never cause you any harm. So the safest way to keep diabetes under control is to start controlling your diet and exercise.

For diet you must naturally eat foods that are not high in sugar. As the diabetic person already had a problem consuming the blood glucose released from foods, it makes sense not to tax the digestive system further by adding in large amounts to the sugar consumed by the body.. It is best to get a diet chart designed by a dietitian to help you keep your diet on track.

With exercises as well try and pick something that you enjoy doing. If you think of exercise as a punishment you are not going to enjoy it at all. What you need do to do it pick up activities that you already enjoy doing and which are physically demanding.

That way it will not be too difficult to get yourself in the mood to exercise. If you enjoy shopping just drive to the mall and walk from one end to the other of all the floors. You will be surprised at how much exercise you get done!
