Focus On Prevention

3 09 2010

With diabetes type two there is nothing better than focusing on prevention. A certain sort of unhealthy lifestyle is what causes the disease. So if you are already at risk of diabetes because your parents or grandparents had it, you need to avoid that unhealthy lifestyle.

It is a simple thing to do if you can set your mind to it. Here are the things you need to focus on.

Exercise:

Insulin sensitivity can be drastically improved thanks to exercise. The body produces more insulin and digests blood sugar better if you exercise on a regular basis. There is also a 6% decrease in relative risk of developing diabetes if you exercise regularly.

Weight Loss:

Stay at a healthy weight and reduce your risk of diabetes. For every ten pounds over ideal weight you are increasing your risk of developing diabetes even more. If you are over weight or obese you are much more likely to develop type two diabetes.

Smoking:

If you smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day you are again in a higher risk group for developing diabetes. So quit smoking as soon as you can. Smoking also effects the body’s ability to use insulin and if you are a smoker you are three times more likely to develop diabetes.
