Exercise affects blood sugar levels. And depending on the diabetic’s condition it may reduce or increase blood sugar levels after a work out. Many diabetics have observed that their blood sugar levels imporved after adopting a workout program like walking. It has been observed in diabetics with Type 2 diabetes that exercise, besides helping them to lose fat, also helped them to regulate blood sugar, increased body’s insulin sensitivity and decreased blood lipids.

Exercise, dietary changes and medication have always been the key to control and eliminate diabetes among diabetics, however intensive exercise carried out for longer terms have been significantly proven to increase body’s ability to improve blood sugar levels.

Muscles obtain energy from glucose stored in the muscle cells as glycogen. When the supply of glycogen drops, glucose from the blood stream is used to provide energy. In case of diabetics who exercise, their body replaces the stored glycogen in the muscle cells which result in lowering the blood glucose levels.

Exercise is an alternative form of medicine and a natural cure for diabetics and it not only helps lower blood sugar levels but also helps in reducing dosage of medicines. In some cases it helps in avoiding the medications altogether by improving blood sugar levels.
