Do You Understand Enzyme!!!

29 04 2011

Digestive enzymes are essential part of the digestive process that break down food and nutrients into a form that the cells can absorb. Without these, all the food we eat will be pretty much unless. These enzymes are found in our digestive tract and inside our cells. These enzymes are also found in our saliva so as early as the chewing process is digestion, the food we eat is already broken down into blocks that our cells can absorb. Below we will show you the three major areas in the body where enzymes are produced and are very active.

Oral Cavity Enzymes: Human and animal salivary glands produce digestive enzymes that help break down food while it is chewed. Aside from breaking the food down, the enzymes in the mouth also disinfects the food before it is taken in the esophagus down to the digestive tract.

One type of enzyme found in the mouth that you should know is potassium bicarbonate. What it does is to neutralize the acidity levels in the esophagus. Another type of enzyme that plays a critical role while the food is in the mouth is amylase. What it does is to break down carbohydrates in the food into simple sugar that the cells can absorb.

Stomach Enzymes: Stomach enzymes, also called gastric enzymes, crush and mix the food taken to the stomach. The main digestive enzyme present in the stomach is called paperhanging. If this enzyme is in its active form, it is called pepsin. The main job of pepsin is to break down protein so the cells can absorb them. Without these enzymes, protein will not be absorbed and therefore, damaged cells will not be repaired. The stomach also produces an enzyme called hydrochloric acid. Essentially, it destroys all the bacteria and virus found in the  broken down protein. Without this enzyme, there is a huge possibility to get infected and get sick.

Pancreatic Enzymes: Our pancreas has endocrine glands. Both of these glands produce enzymes released in the circulatory system. What these enzymes do is to control the sugar levels and metabolism in the form of insulin. The pancreas also secretes enzymes that maintain its own health. The ducal cells in the pancreas manufacture bicarbonates that neutralize the acidity level in the stomach. If you remember, the mouth also has such enzymes.

If you will think about it, the enzymes play a very important role in the digestive system. However, it seems to be one of the most ignored. Without these enzymes working properly, your body will not receive the nutrition it needs to produce energy and repair damaged cells. What you can do to make sure your enzymes work is to eat more foods that will help make the work easier for the enzymes. You can eat less acidic foods and eat foods in their form such as vegetables so digesting them is easier and will require less production.

These practices are ancient and even if they are not advised by doctors, science can prove that both yoga and meditation can help alleviate pain. During the meditative process, the brain goes in to a alpha state, a state that is deeper then sleep, which means that the brain is in a deeper state of relaxation, making it easier to conduct the healing process.

   Acupuncture:

Acupuncture, just like yoga, is a practice that has been around for ages. And just like yoga, acupuncture is not considered a medical practice. The process involves sticking needles to pressure points in the body points believed to be the areas where the natural life forces flow. Blocking these points can redirect the energy somewhere and thus remove the pain.

   Exercise:

True enough, exercise may sound painful. you have to bear the pain because it will ease the pain away. What exercise does is to ensure consistency in your blood flow. As you breathe deeper, more oxygen is taken into your bloodstream and your brain. A balanced blood flow makes your cells work better and thus make your immune system stronger.

After ten in the morning, ultraviolet rays are already present so you better stay inside.

   Hypnosis:

Hypnosis is an accepted practice in psychology and psychiatry to treat mental illness. It has a certain charm of secrecy and taboo to it but is a great alternative to mange pain, especially if the pain you are suffering from is acute. This does not make the pain go away. What it does is to take your consciousness into a state that does not recognize pain.

   Natural Analgesics:

Earlier, we mentioned that the sun is natural analgesic. In nature, there are plants and herbs that are made into ointment. These are very effective in managing pain and they are completely natural so you do not have to worry about side effects like other chemically produce medicines do.

‘3′ Killer Exercises To Get Rid Of Love Handles Fast!!!

27 04 2011

The flab on your waist, also called love handles, can be such an ugly addition to your physique people find this very annoying, especially when they are buying clothes. To the dismay of many, their love handles would not go away. As a result, they resort to processes like liposuction and surgery. This is not necessary unless you are lazy. You can get rid of your love handles in a perfectly natural way: exercise. In this article, we will present to you the top three killer exercises to get rid of love handles fast.

The Trunk Twist: Also referred to as the standing trunk twist, this is a great exercise that allows you to warm up for other exercises as you work on your love handles. Since the love handles, also called obliques, are just around your waist, exercise can burn this fat and strengthen the muscles around it as well. Below are the steps to facilitate the exercise.

   - Stand with your feet apart, parallel to your shoulders.

   - Your knees should be slightly bent.

   - Now, extend your arms with your palm facing away. The position is similar to how you will stand if you will push something away.

   - The next step is to twist your upper body without shifting your feet. Your hands should go along the direction you are twisting.

   - Do this from left to right.

   - You can also put a rhythm to it by counting.

   The Lying Twist:  Many people call this exercise the leg twist. This is a great exercise after the trunk twist because pretty much, you have already warmed up. To do the exercise, follow the steps below;

   - First, you need to lie on your back on a mat. Avoid lying on a hard surface because it is not a relaxing experience.

   - Make sure your arms are flat on the floor on your sides. The palms should be facing down to ease off pressure.

   - Next, raise your legs upward with your knees bent lightly.

   - The next step is to lower your legs to one side. Let it stay for around five seconds.

   - Lift them again and then lower your legs on the other side.

The Oblique Crunch: This exercise is essentially a variation of a popular and common exercise: the ab cruncher. With the ab cruncher, you lie down on your back and you lift your upper body and lie back down again. The problem with this exercise is it focuses on the fat in the stomach area but not on the sides. The oblique crunch is facilitated in a way that focuses on the muscles and fat on the sides of your belly.

   - First, lye down on the floor and bend your knees a little bit. Make sure the soles of your feet are on the floor.

   - Put your hands behind your head for protection and balance. A variation is to put your hands on your chest.

   - As you lift your upper body, twist it so your right shoulder meets your left knee.

   - Lie back down and lift yourself up again but this time, your left shoulder should meet your right knee.

   - Complete several reps and you should be good to go.

Eat More And Still Lose Weight!!!

26 04 2011

Is it even remotely possible? We all know that in order to lose weight, you have to eat less. This is the same principle we apply in offloading cargo. A ship or car will perform better if we remove excess baggage. The reality is that the laws of physics may not necessarily apply with the laws of nutrition. It is true that you can eat more and still lose weight. In this articles, we will explore this possibility and offer you some solutions that actually work.

   Understanding Human Weight:

We gain weight when we eat or if we have a chronic disease that causes an imbalance in our metabolism and digestive system. However, we also gain weight even if we do not eat a lot as long as the food intake is high in calories and fat. This is what usually happens to people who gain excessive weight. For example, a slice of cake may look smaller than a plate of vegetables, but the same slice of cake can make you gain more weight than the vegetables. Another common cause of weight gain is sedentary lifestyle. When we eat, we need to digest the food and excrete the through sweat. People who barely move do not burn fat and as a result, they gain excess weight.

   Eat More And Lose More:

One secret to eating more and still lose weight is eating five or six times a day. This may sound absurd but the key thing in this approach is that you only eat the right portion. Too often, people skip meals and this makes them hunger and thus makes them eat larger portions. If you will eat just the right amount of portion, your body will have just enough nutrients to get you by the next few hours without getting hungry. The right portions gives your body just the right energy to fuel what you need and thus, all the food you eat is used. If you eat large portions, a huge part of your meal is stored as energy and excess fat. This is what causes you to gain weight.

The next approach is to balance what you eat. There are so many types of food that can give you the energy that you need without the risk of gaining weight. Fruits, for example, are very rich in simple sugar that can give you the energy you need to function normally in a given day. Eat fruits and couple with vegetables and you should be well off. Eat a small portion of meat regularly to supply your body with protein. This way, you can eat more without feeling worried of weight gain.

The last approach is to exercise. You can eat as much as you want but make sure there is a venue with which you can shed off excess fat and calories. The number of times you need to exercise a week and the intensity of the workout will depend on the amount of food you eat. What’s important is you burn as much fat as you can while also eating heartily.

But how does one person really stop smoking and where should one person begin? Kicking the habit is very difficult and understandably, one needs guidance on top of determination and will. In this articles, we will show you several ways to stop smoking. These are simple strategies that should make quitting easier for you,

   Strategies 1: Understand the Reality

Before you even begin quitting, you need to understand why it seems so hard to stop smoking. Cigarettes have a chemical known as nicotine. This is the very substance that make that body physically addicted to cigarettes and tobacco. If you stop abruptly, your body will significantly crave for this substances and  might cause some behavior changes. It is therefore important that your quitting plan is methodological so you can reduce the possibility of a relapse.

The second thing that makes it difficult to quit is the stress and the change in environment and habit. You may be always frequenting a spot where you smoke and you also spend this time with your friends. Quitting means you will avoid the areas where smokers hang out and this can cause loneliness, depression, and anxiety. It causes you to be alienated and this can make you smoke again. Managing this stress is a key to quit successfully.

   Strategies 2: Develop a Mantra:

The first step to stop smoking is to have a mantra of positive outcome. Having these benefits and goals in mind will keep you motivated and will remind you of your purpose all the time. Sit back and think of these benefits and you will realize how important it is to achieve your goal of quitting. Examples of these are:

   1. I will be healthier

   2. I will reduce the risk of cancer and cardiovascular diseases

   3. I will reduce my expense in vices

   4. People around me will be happier

   5. I am making a contribution to the environment

   Strategies 3: The Game Plan:

Once you have the mantra, develop a game plan that works. Start by setting a date when you will quit. Next, have a tracker where you can list you current cigarette consumption. This is where you will list all the cigarettes you smoked in a day so you can keep track of your progress. Next, you need to tell your family and friends that you plan to stop or quit. This will make it easier for you to keep your promise since people around you are expecting you to stop. The last thing to do is to find an alternative that will help you forget about smoking and turn your dull moments meaningful. You can start in sports or exercising  everyday. These activities will make you think twice before you light up that cigarette stick again.

Benefits Of A Mediterranean Diet

21 04 2011

Just what is the Mediterranean diet? Simply put, it is a kind of diet plan that was popularized years ago, sometime in the “90s.” which traces back to ancient lifestyle and culture in Mediterranean countries. Essentially, this is the diet of many Italians that is proven scientifically to reduce weight and prolong life. This diet is based on the food pyramid in which the food groups are categorized by order of what you need to eat the most and what you should eat the least.

   The Food Pyramid:

The food pyramid is a nutrition guide designed for easy interpretation. The triangle is separated horizontally multiple times and the food in each level or represent the percentage of the food group you need to eat everyday. The food pyramid has been used by many organizations across the world to promote proper nutrition. Check with your local nutritionist for a copy of a food pyramid. You can also browse online, print a copy, and place it on your refrigerator or meal planner.

   The Benefits of Mediterranean Diet:

Aside from having delicious meal, the Mediterranean offers a lot of benefits that you may not have heard of. Below are just a few of them and we hope you will think carefully and consider shifting into this diet the soonest possible time. Besides, the Mediterranean diet has been around for thousands of years and has proven to be very effective. This is why many people is the Mediterranean coastal region die of old age and not of any diseases.

The Mediterranean diet is proven to prevent disease such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Heart Disease and Cancer and many more. Studies have been made involving around 12 million participants and the result of these studies are just amazing.

First off, the Mediterranean diet is rich in antioxidants that will significantly help you ward off the development of cancer. This is precisely because you will be eating a substantial amount of beans and seeds that contain thousands of antioxidants. What these antioxidants do is to restore balance in the electrons of your cells that were damaged also known as free radicals.

The Mediterranean diet is rich in monounsaturated fats, a kind of healthy fat that the body actually used for fuel. This is the kind of fat that does not make you gain weight and it is also the type of fat that fights disease because they are anti-inflammatory. Without these fats, your body will rely only on carbohydrates for energy and fuel. However, energy taken from carbohydrates does not have anti-disease properties.

Studies have also shown that this diet can reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes because it is high in fiber which cause your digestive to slow down. If your metabolism is too fast and does not slow down, you can expect wild and erratic swings in your blood sugar level, making you susceptible to diabetes. With a balanced digestive system, your cells also given appropriate time to absorb the nutrients delivered to them, therefore maximizing every drop of nutrient there is from the food you eat.

Road Map To Your Wellness…

20 04 2011

Many people seem to be lost as far as the pathway to a marvelous health is concerned. Many have tried all those commercial pills for weight loss, surgery, and a lot of things and yet they seemingly did not get the results that they want. Here, we share with you the three basic things you need to ensure that you have the right roadmap to your wellness. It is practically not important to try fads in the world of dieting and weight loss. You do not even have to spend all your hard earned money on training equipment or gym memberships. All you have to do is to follow the three-step process below.

   Eat The Right Foods:

The very first step to be healthy is to eat the right foods. This means that you should be familiar with the so called food pyramid. Basically, this is a triangle split horizontally in which food groups are labeled and categorized per level. At the bottom of the triangle are foods that you should eat more often. These are wheat, grains, pasta, and starchy vegetables from which your body can get carbohydrates to fuel the energy it needs.

On the next level are fruits and vegetables from which your body can get instant energy or sugar. The fruits will do that but the vegetables will supply you with the vitamins and minerals that you need.  On the next level are the foods that you need to eat lesser like meat, fish and poultry. These are foods that may be rich in protein but also harmful to your health if taken in excess. On the last level, the top one, are foods that have bad cholesterol content and should be eaten sparingly. These are dairy products, eggs, and fatty foods.

   Exercise Regularly:

There is no point eating the food if you do not exercise. A sedentary lifestyle does not only make you weak but it also makes you age. Without movement, there is no way for your body to burn all those excess calories or fat. Exercise is a great way for your body to burn bad fat. It also strengthen your bones and muscles, making you less susceptible to fracture. Another big benefit of regular exercise is the development of ideal blood pressure. Regular exercise strengthen the heart muscles, making it more capable of pumping blood at times when your body needs more oxygen without putting too much stress on the heart.

   Avoid Vices:

Cigarettes and alcohol should never touch your lips! You will never have any benefits from any of those two. Wine, on the other hand, is a great alternative. A glass of wine will do your heart great things. As long as you do not take it in excess, you should be just fine. Tobacco will only make you likely to get cancer. it destroys the cells in your lungs, considering that it contains thousands of carcinogens that can lead to cellular breakdown. Alcohol will also  burn your liver and its strong chemical content will weaken your internal organs, destroying them slowly until you bleed internally and suffer severe damage.

Diabetes Insipidus 101

19 04 2011

Many people do not realize that there are two type of diabetes, the mellitus and the insipidus. What we will discuss is diabetes insipidus so we can give more light on it. Basically, diabetes insipidus is different from mellitus because the person who has it experiences excessive thirst and excretes pretty much a large amount of urine. Even if the person does not drink a lot, he still urinates too much and this can lead to severe dehydrates. Statistically, only three out of a hundred thousand people have this type of diabetes.

  Signs and Symptoms:

As mentioned earlier, this type of diabetes is characterized by excessive thirst and urination. In most cases, the patient prefers cold water and urine is pale instead of the normal yellowish color.  In rare occasions, blurred vision is experienced. However, there is no elevated blood sugars level in the patient. Patients are also likely to get sick and develop fever. Some may even vomit and have diarrhea. perhaps the most disturbing symptom is the patient experiencing nocturia or awakening in the middle of the night to urinate.

   Types and Causes:

Essentially, there are four types of diabetes insipidus. The most common type of this diabetes, called pituitary DI, is caused by a lack of a hormone called vasopressin. What this hormone does is to balance the urine content in the kidney. This normalize the urination process so a person excretes in normal intervals. The vasopressin increases the urea content of the urine in the kidney and once it reaches a certain level, that is the only time the person will excrete. This is also why the normal urine is yellowish. This type of DI is caused by tumors, infections, head injuries and genetics.

The second type of diabetes insipidus is called gestational DI. This happens during pregnancy if the pituitary gland  is damaged during the formation of the baby in the placenta. This, however, is treatable and it is commonly observed that it disappears about four weeks after birth.

The third kind of DI is called nephrogenic DI. This happens when the kidneys is unable to respond to the effects of vasopressin. Most of the time, the cause of this DI is kidney damage, during side effects and heredity. If this type of DI is acquired through heredity, it cannot be treated.

The last type of DI is called dipsogenic DI. It happens when vasopressin cannot work due to excessive fluid intake. So essentially it is a vicious cycle because the patients is forced by the DI to drink but when he does, vasopressin cannot work and result to DI. This is mainly caused by the brain’s failure to suppress thirst.

   Treatment:

The first treatment is to replenish lost water. Patients with DI are advised to drink specific drinks that have high electrolytes. This is commonly found in energy drinks or in powder form that they can dissolve in water. The next type of treatment is surgical operation in the pituitary gland to correct its nerve endings so it can coordinate clearly with the rest of the brain. Extensive care is needed after the surgery so the operation is sure to be successful. The last type of treatment available for DI is balanced diet through minimal intake of hot foods and water because these can cause dehydration.
