Diabetic Nephropathy is a kidney disease, caused due to diabetes. Diabetes can affect many parts of the body including the kidneys. The tiny blood vessels in kidneys have holes, big enough to filter waste, but small enough to keep useful products like protein and red blood cells in the blood. These vessels can be damaged by high levels of sugar in blood if the diabetes is left uncontrolled, thus leading to Nephropathy. If the damage is bad enough it can cause kidney damage.

Unfortunately Diabetic nephropathy does not cause any symptoms until kidney damage is severe. As the condition progresses the symptoms are more visible such as swelling of feet and ankles, weakness, stomach upset, confusion or trouble concentrating, insommia, and loss of appetite.

   Diagnosis of nephropathy:

The pathologist or doctor tests the persons urine for protein. The presence of protein indicates that diabetes has damaged the holes in the blood vessels of the kidneys, due to which leakage of protein and other essential nutrients occurs through urine. The doctor may check the persons blood to establish the extent of damage.

The following are some of the most important things that one can do to lessen the impact of damage,

   Keep ones blood pressure low,

   Control blood sugar levels,

Stick to a healthy diet and eat less protein,

   Be physically active everyday,

   Stop smoking,

Check with ones doctor before taking any new medicine,

It diabetic nephropathy gets worse and the kidneys stop working it can lead to kidney failure. This can cause nausea, vomiting, weakness, shortness of breath and confusion. In severe cases it can cause seizures and coma. At this stage the person is advised dialysis by the doctor.
